The First Special-Ops Mission in Afghanistan just weeks after 9/11
On October 19, 2001, just weeks after the devastating terrorist attacks on September 11, the United States initiated a critical counter offensive against the Taliban in Afghanistan.
The 9/11 attacks left an indelible mark on the United States, prompting a swift and determined response. President George W. Bush declared a Global War on Terror, with Afghanistan as the primary target due to its role as a haven for Al Qaeda. The mission on October 19 was a critical component of this strategy, aimed at striking a decisive blow against the Taliban and their terrorist allies.
This mission marked the beginning of Operation Enduring Freedom, aimed at dismantling Al Qaeda and overthrowing the Taliban regime that provided sanctuary to the terrorist group. The operation involved a coordinated assault by the elite U.S. military units: Delta Force operators, Army Rangers, and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, known as the Night Stalkers.
Objective Gecko raided the compound believed to be the residence of Mullah Omar, the leader of the Taliban. The Night Stalkers, renowned for their expertise in flying under hazardous conditions, transported the Delta operators via MH-47 Chinook helicopters and MH-60 Direct Action Penetrators (DAP), successfully executing the longest air assault raid in U.S. Military history.
